Running for Sanctuary

poster for Logan's Run

We’re travelling along a deserted landscape, while quietly but slowly increasing, two beautiful musical notes repeat. Off in the distance we see a handful of large crystalline domes huddled together on the plain. The two notes build and swell on the soundtrack until, at the moment of crescendo, they become a glorious sequence of chords as we are upon the domes. And then, we’re in.

logan's run cityInside, there’s a city. A wondrous city of lights and speeding vehicles. An undulating tube shoots sleek cars across the synthetic sky. We see glittering technological pyramids and other geometric shapes that are undefined by our experience. The music becomes staccato, shimmering, as synthetic as the city but somehow more fantastic. Randomly Factual

richard attenborough welcome

Welcome….to EveryDamnDayDecember!

So to fulfill one of the terms of the Liebster Award thingy, and to kick off Every Damn Day December, I thought I would put up some semi-biographical facts about myself. Here we go:

  1. I don’t know how the hell I’m going to manage to post every damn day.
  2. My favorite fictional superhero is Spider-Man.(And like Stan Lee, I hate when people spell it “Spiderman” without the hyphen.) It’s Spider-Man! The amalgam of spider and man! Thhhwippp!
  3. Only had one surgery in my life: on a torn ligament in my left knee. This injury didn’t happen in a usual way, and I just thought of a post I could do, so I won’t tell the rest of the story now.
  4. I’m mildly allergic to almost every airborn element: smoke, pollen, pet hair, etc. It’s really annoying without being too detrimental.
  5. My absolute favorite type of music is jazz fusion/progressive rock which are kind of the same thing in my mind.
  6. I think Herbie Hancock, the jazz master of keys, is probably the coolest being in the universe.

    herbie at the keys

    see what I mean?

  7. I like the Beatles better than Elvis. That’s supposed to be a great indicator of what and who a person is, so take it for what you will.
  8. My favorite band ever varies a little, but it’s usually Pink Floyd.
  9. Currently I live in Vancouver, Washington. I’m not sure why. Couldn’t find work here, so I went back to college to take web development classes. Thanks to our wonderful government (ha!), I get paid to go to school. That’s now my job!
  10. I’m a Marvel Comics guy all the way. Still, The Dark Knight is my favorite comic-book film.
  11. I’m 43, but I think I’m aging backwards. Like Benjamin Button, but mentally rather than physically.
  12. Politically, I’m to the left of left. I think Pres. Obama is too conservative!
  13. I’m a straight male, but secure enough to admit there are a few guys I might go gay for. Bowie comes to mind. Henry Cavill, the new Man of Steel. Hugh Jackman. Oh, and one other…………………………..
  14. Religious I am not. Pretty much an atheist, though I do feel that something is out there. Maybe just more evolved species that kind of oversee us. But that’s a whole different can of crazy to open up. Let me just say, I get why people believe the stuff they believe and I respect that. Religion is just not for me.
  15. I prefer Star Wars to Star Trek, but my mind’s been in heavy fluctuation these last few years. In the 80s it was no contest in my opinion. But lately… absolutely liked the J.J. Abrams Trek films better than the prequels Lucas shat out. But now, Abrams is going to the far, far away galaxy and that might make that particular pendulum swing back.
  16. I’ve loved Lord of the Rings since I read the trilogy as a kid. But Peter Jackson’s movies improve on the books. Yeah, I goddamn said it! And the places where the films differ from the books make the story better. That’s right, I goddamn reiterated it!
  17. The first movie I ever loved was Logan’s Run. More on that tomorrow!
  18. The first girl I ever loved was named Lark something. We were six.
  19. I think I’m cheating by listing mostly preferences rather than personal facts.
  20. Speaking of Peter Jackson, I wouldn’t mind if he made ten Hobbit movies. I’d watch that world even if the characters did nothing but smoke and eat. (Which they kind of do for the first hour of An Unexpected Journey, huh?)
  21. If I wasn’t a writer, I’d be a writer. Literally, I have no other skills.
  22. Well, reading. Is reading a skill? For that matter, is writing a skill? (I’m kidding, writers!) Of course it isn’t a skill. It’s an………..

    writing is art

    yeah it is

  23. I thought I’d finished this post two days ago, but I’m here tweaking it up to the last minute. This is the first post of EvDaDaDec,  after all!
  24. Dogs over cats. That’s just the way it is. I don’t mind cats, but I’ll take a dog anytime.

That’s enough for now. Don’t want to overwhelm you. Every Damn Day December day one complete! See you tomorrow.

Wherein Your Humble Narrator Bitches and Moans: WordPressin’ 3

Entering the fourth week of the WordPress class with Lorelle, I feel I have a tangible growth of technical knowledge about what the WP site can do for a blogger. Normally, tangible growths are not a good thing. But this one seems to be expanding my mind, so we’ll see how it goes.

(This article is in a series! If you missed the first two, click here for part one, and here for part two. Click nothing to continue reading part three….)

Though I’m in my second quarter of Web Dev courses, I still feel more like a writer than a coder. All the programming minutiae are seeping through my layers of tech-idiocy, but its still not intuitive to me. I’m still stuggling to do simple screen captures and the like. So the article I’m working on for our class site is distinctly more text heavy than the other students. Theirs are loaded with snazzy graphics and even animations that I grasp how to do mentally, but wrestle with in practicality. Beginning to wonder if I’m wrong in my approach to this degree.

Why “TreatmentofVisions”? Huh? WTF Does it Mean?

So I’ll try to tell you what TreatmentofVisions means, okay? I’ve heard it seems a strange kind of title. People go “Why don’t you name your blog after yourself?” “Call it something normal”, is another suggestion I’ve gotten. (What is normal is an entirely different discussion, so I normally disengage from those kind of judgements.)  Others insist “Your title should be something funny!” I guess since the tone of most of my posts here are mostly humorous. I think those people actually make a good point; but, on the other hand, funny blog titles can make it seem that the writer doesn’t take their content very seriously. Let me tell you: even when I’m being funny, I’m serious as all fuck about it. (Try on that pair of paradox-pants!) Finally, some folk merely express confusion over the title of this blog, or simply never address the issue at all.

First of all, I’d like to suggest to you, gentle reader, to not overthink it. Despite the kind of serious tone of my blog title, this site is not some kind of academic wormhole of analyses and diatribes. I just post shit here. I didn’t overthink the title when I decided on it. The fact is, this blog was started as a college assignment. (If you go back to my earlier posts, you can kind of tell.) Everything was posted as a response to a class exercise or as drafts of essays we were working on. So, in that sense, the Treatment of my Visions would entail both the teacher’s grade and the comments from my classmates. Also, I would comment on their blogs and be very kind and encouraging and shit. I would treat everyone’s work with respect and constructive criticism (if required). So there’s that explanation.

Another thing is that Treatment of Visions makes me think of a bigger project that I am working on. Keeps it in my mind even if I’m not able to work on it as much as I would like to right now. So the title relates to a larger title, so to speak. I can’t talk much about that project yet. Stay tuned.

Someone out there might think of Dangerous Visions, a famous anthology of SF stories edited by Harlan Ellison. One of the most lauded and controversial (at the time) collections ever printed, this fantastic volume was first published in 1967 and remains in print to this day. If someone were to point out that I might have had this book in my subconscious while choosing my blog title, I couldn’t argue. I’ve been undoubtedly influenced by this collection, and all of the authors represented in it are SF giants. So there’s that, too

From a creative standpoint, I think of the posts I put up here as practice for publication, either on the web or print. Not quite rough drafts, but stuff not quite ready for prime time. In other words, treatments. Just because a story is on here doesn’t mean that’s the end of its life or that I’m finished with it. Hopefully, this is only the beginning. As far as my outbursts and mania, well, this is probably the only place for those mind-excretions. (You’re welcome for that glittering image.) Also, any feedback I get from my gentle readers is treatment. I’m not getting many comments yet, but please comment. Even if its “EEEEEWWWWW!” Everything is helpful to me at this point.

In short, that’s why “treatmentofvisions”. I didn’t really intend for it to be a permanent title, but now I’m accustomed to its presence, you know. So I think I’ll let it stay. Let me know if you have a strong opinion one way or the other in the comments if you like. Give me the treatment, gentle readers, you princes and princesses of the internet! See you later.
